Masala Makhane | Spiced Foxnut | How to make Masala Makhane at Home |

Hi Supermoms,

I had never heard or seen the Makhane/Phool Makhana /Foxnuts till the time I came to North India. Makhane/Makhana are actually the seeds of a particular type of lotus and is very nutritive in nature. People in the North consider it as the food of the Gods. It is widely consumed during Navratras.

I have tasted the Makhane in temple as Prashad...soft and melt in the mouth!
Popular Makhane preparation is the Kheer or pudding. But I like the South Indian Style Masala Makhane!

This is quick and healthy snack! Crunchy and tasty too!

Masala Makhane | South Indian Style Spiced Foxnuts :

Preparation time : 5 minutes
Cooking time : 15 minutes
1 cup = 250 gms cup
Serves : 2-4
Storage : Keeps good for upto 1 week when stored in an airtight container

Ingredients :

 2 cups Makhane
1/4 cup groundnuts
2  teaspoons sesame oil
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/4 teaspoon red chilli powder
pinch of asafoedida powder
1 sprig curry leaves( washed and dried)
salt (to taste)

Method:

1. Heat a wide pan with one teaspoon oil  and roast the groundnuts over low flame till they are browned uniformly. Set it aside.
Note: If you are using already roasted groundnuts, then avoid this step.
2. Place the pan back on flame and heat the remaining oil.
3. Temper with mustard seeds and curry leaves.
4. Add asafoetida, turmeric powder ,red chilli powder and salt.
5. Immediately add the makhane and start mixing them over low flame.
6. Keep stirring and roasting the makhane till they turn crisp.
Tip: You can 'hear' the crispiness. This step will take 7 to 8 minutes.
7. Add the roasted groundnuts, mix well and switch off.

Your masala makhane is ready. Once it is completely cool, store them in an air tight container.

Chef Tips :

1. You can avoid mustard seeds , turmeric and red chilli powder, if you are preparing this snack for Navratras. Instead you can add cumin powder/seeds and black pepper powder. You can use powdered rock salt/sendha namak instead of regular salt.
2. I have added peanuts for the extra crunch, you can add other dry fruits and nuts also.
3.You can change flavour each time you make them.

You can also send a small portion of MASALA MAKHANE in your kid's snack box...it is healthier than Store bought chips.

Have you tried making Banana Chips at home?

HAPPY COOKING!!!

With love,
