strawberry kara kuzhambu

Dear Supermoms,

‘Strawberries’ in a South Indian Kuzhambu ? Yes, you heard me right !
Excited?
So am  I sharing this unique kuzhambu recipe with you all.
I heard about this fantastic recipe from one of my best friends Bharathi.
As strawberries are in season now and I had a tub of strawberries in my refrigerator, I could’nt wait to try . A tangy and spicy preparation with juicy strawberries sauteed’ in Indian spices and simmered over low flame. I served it for lunch yesterday with Jeera Pulao. Lip smacking !!!
It can enjoyed with steaming hot  rice and dollop of ghee. It is also a quick and easy side dish for Idli, Dosa, Appam, Puri and even Rotis. I can’t thank Bharathi enough for this amazing recipe.

Strawberry Kara Kuzhambu :

Preparation time : 5 minutes
Cooking time : 15 -20 minutes
Serves: 6
1 Cup = 250 ml Cup
Special Vessel: A medium size Kadai/ Wok , Iron ladle Or tempering pan

Ingredients :
1 cup chopped strawberries ( I used 12 medium sized strawberries)
2 garlic cloves ( roughly crushed using pestle and mortar)
1 sprig curry leaves ( tear roughly)
2 teaspoon chilli powder ( Kashmiri chilli powder gives a good colour)
1 teaspoon dhania powder/coriander powder
1 teaspoon vendhaya powder/methi powder ( or use 1/4 teaspoon whole)
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
2 teaspoons channa dal/kadalai paruppu/bengal gram
2 tablespoons oil
1 dry red chilli ( broken into 2 or 3 pieces)
salt to taste

Method:

1. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil and add the channa dal.

2.When the dal turns golden brown add the mustard seeds and some curry leaves.
3.When the mustard seeds splutter, add the strawberries and mix well over low heat.

4.Add the chilli powder, dhania powder, vendhaya powder, salt and keep stirring to mix for one minute. You can add one teaspoon oil at this stage.
TIP: Incase you are using methi seeds, add them along with channa dal while tempering.
 Keep stirring to prevent burning.

5. Pour 1& 1/2 cups of water , close the pan and cook the kuzhambu for 10-15 minutes or till the time the oil separates on the sides of the kadai.

6. Heat a small ladle/pan with one teaspoon of oil, add the crushed garlic , red chilli and curry leaves.

7. When the garlic lightly changes colour , switch off and pour this into the kuzhambu.

Your delicious Strawberry Kara Kuzhambu is ready to be served. You can adjust the water quantity depending upon the thickness of the kuzhambu you like.  You can also try my tasty Masala Vadai Kuzhambu, Vadaga Kara Kuzhambu recipes.
