Thiruvathirai Kootu | How to make Thiruvathirai Kootu at home | Stepwise Pictures | Easy Recipe | Tamil Festival Delicacy







Hi SUPERMOMS,

This is the perfect accompaniment for the KALI that is made on the auspicious day of TIRUVATHIRAI. Usually vegetables like potato,carrot,yellow and white pumpkin, Lima beans, large seeds of beans,brinjal,peas and groundnuts are used in this KOOTU. 

You can boil the vegetables separately and then add it to the gravy and simmer it or you can pressure cook it all together (as I have done). Many feel that pressure cooking dishes dilutes the taste of the dishes. But this is not true. The hack is in using the right amount of water while using pressure cooker.

Thiruvadirai Kootu :

Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time : 20 minutes
Serves -4 to 6
1 cup = 


Ingredients:


3 Cups Mixed ChoppedVegetables
1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
 spl. KOOTU powder
1 sprig curry leaves
salt and turmeric powder
1/2 Cup Powdered arhar dal( tuvar dal) or 1/2 cup boiled arhar dal
1 tablespoon Sesame Oil
Tamarind juice extracted from a lemon size tamarind.

KOOTU POWDER 
Dry toast coriander seeds1 tsp 
Dry Red chillies- 4-5
Pepper corn -1/2 spoon
 Channa dal/Kadalai paruppu/ Split Bengal Gram-1/2 tsp
Urad dal(split) -1/2 spoon
coconut (freshly grated) - 3 tsp
sesame seeds(white)-1/2 spoon
poppy seeds-1/4 spoon. 

Powder the above your mixer and use it as your KOOTU POWDER.

Method:


1.In a wide mouthed pressure pan, add 3. Tsp of sesame oil. 
2.When it heats up,add mustard seeds. 
3.When it crackles, add fresh curry leaves .
4.Add all the vegetables.
5.add turmeric
6.Then add the tamarind juice.
7.Now add the powdered arhar dal.
8.Add the KOOTU POWDER
9.Add salt according to taste.
10.Add enough water for the dal and the vegetables to cook. The consistency of the KOOTU is thick. 
11.Pressure cook upto 5 whistles in medium flame.
12. Open the cooker after the steam subsides completely. 

The flavour of the KOOTU will entice you completely!!!

Serve hot with TIRUVADIRAI KALI.
