Gooseberry is in season and here is another simple, delicious and quick to make rice variety that you can make in minutes.
Make sure to boil rice with just enough water so that they do not stick to each other but is soft and boiled.
Just grate the goose berries and the rest of the ingredients to make this rice is very similar to that of lemon rice. You can add roasted groundnuts, fresh grated coconuts as garnish . How ever , even finely chopped cilantro or mint leaves add to the flavour .
Nellikai Sadam :
Preparation time : 20 minutes ( includes boiling rice)
Cooking time : 7-8 minutes
Serves : 4
1 cup = 250 ml cup
Ingredients :
3 cups Raw Rice ( sona masoori , cooked)
2 large goose berries ( grated)
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
salt to taste
For tempering :
2 teaspoons sesame oil
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon bengal gram /channa dal/kadalai paruppu
1 teaspoon husked black gram/urad dal/ullutham paruppu
4-5 green chillies ( finely chopped) ( adjust according to the heat of the chillies)
1 sprig curry leaves
For garnish :
Roasted groundnuts / grated fresh coconut/ finely chopped coriander leaves
Method :
1. Heat a kadai/pan with oil and temper with ingredients given under 'for tempering'.
2.Once tempered add the grated gooseberry and fry over low flame for just one minute by stirring continuously as it fries.
3. Add turmeric powder, salt and switch off.
4. Add the cooked rice and mix well so that they are uniformly coated with the spices.
Chef tip : You can cool the rice in a wide plate before they are added to the mixture so that they do not stick. If the rice is completely cooled, you can mix the rice over low flame .
5. Garnish with your choice of garnishes and serve hot.
