Hi Supermoms,
Banana Flower or 'Vazhaipoo' has so many health benefits. I have shared about them in my previous vazhaipoo recipes also. Once you understand the cleaning of the banana flower, making various recipes using vazhaipoo becomes easy.
Though Vazhaipoo Vadai is most popular , you can try making various other dishes too. Today, I am sharing a delicious dal/kootu recipe using vazhaipoo.
Vazhaipoo is a mood elevator and nature's anti depressant pill. So, try and include this healthy vegetable at least once a week.
Recipe Adapted from 'The Chettinad Cookbook'.
Chettinad Vazhaipoo Kootu Recipe :
Preparation time : 15 minutes
Cooking time : 25 minutes
Serves : 4
1 cup = 250 ml cup
Ingredients :
1 cup vazhaipoo/banana flower ( cleaned and finely chopped, keep it soaked in buttermilk till use)
1/2 cup moong dal /split and husked green gram ( boiled and mashed)
1 onion ( finely chopped)
2 green chillies ( slit )
1 teaspoon sambar powder
1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder
salt to taste
For tempering :
2 teaspoons sesame oil
1 dry red chilli
1 teaspoon cumin seeds/jeera
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon urad dal
1 sprig curry leaves
pinch of asafoetida
Method :
1. In a kadai or heavy bottom vessel , add the boiled and mashed moong dal, onions, green chillies, salt and adjust water levels.
2. Cook over low flame for 5-6 minutes.
3. Add the sambar powder , banana florets and let the kootu simmer till the vazhaipoo is cooked completely.
4. Heat an iron ladle or small pan with oil and temper with ingredients given under 'for tempering'.
5. Pour it over the kootu.
Alternate Method :
1. Pressure cook moong dal ( un cooked) along with vazhaipoo, green chillies, sambar powder, onions , water and salt ) upto 3 whistles.
2. Switch off and hand blend the mixture.
3. Temper with ingredients given under ' for tempering'.
Your delicious Chettinad Vazhaipoo Kootu is ready to be served.
