Paruppu Poli Recipe | Quick, Easy and Low Calorie Poli Recipe Using Whole Wheat Flour | Sweet Indian Flat Bread

Paruppu Poli Recipe

Hi Supermoms,

'Poli' is a delicacy. It is a sweet stuffed flat bread . Generally coconut- jaggery or dal-jaggery filling is stuffed inside the poli. Poli is a part of our traditional 'Bhogi' meal . I also make it for Tamil New Year.

Traditionally Poli is made using maida/all purpose flour . Many of you would have watched your grandmother or mother making Poli using loads of oil and would be shying away from making them .

I have shared the traditional recipe of Poli earlier. Today, I am sharing an easy, tasty, quick and healthier version of the Puran Poli.

I made these for lunch on Ugadi this year and they turned out so delicious.

Serve hot polis with a drizzle of ghee.

Paruppu Poli Recipe

Paruppu Poli Recipe:

Preparation time: 45 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Serves : 4
1 cup = 250 ml cup

Note: I used organic ( dirt free) Jaggery

Ingredients :

For the Poli Dough:

1 cup whole wheat flour /atta
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
pinch of salt
1 teaspoon ghee
1 tablespoon warm milk
water ( adjust)
1/4 cup atta ( for dusting)

For the filling :

1/2 cup channa dal/ Bengal gram
1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 cup jaggery ( powdered )
1-2 cardamoms ( powdered)

Other ingredients :

1 -2 tablespoon ghee/clarified butter

Method :

1. In a wide bowl, add all the ingredients given ' For the Poli dough'.
2. Add water little by little and knead for 5-7 minutes to make a soft dough.
3. Cover the bowl with a lid or a wet kitchen towel and allow it to rest for 30 minutes.
4. Wash the channa dal twice , add 1/2 cup water , turmeric powder and cook in a pressure cooker upto 3 whistles and switch off.
5. Once the pressure releases, completely drain the excess water from the dal and transfer it to the jar of a mixer/mixie.
6. Add jaggery , cardamom and grind it to a coarse paste .
Chef tip : Do not add water. Use the small jar of the mixer.
7. Your filling is ready.

Let us start making the Poli.

1. Divide the Poli dough and batter into smaller portions and roll them into small balls.
2. Dust the working surface with flour.
3. Take one dough ball, flatten it using your palm, dust it with flour and roll them out into a small circle ( approximately 5 cm in diameter) .
4. Place the filling ( ball) in the centre, close the edges and roll to make it into a ball.
5. Lightly flatten using your palm , and roll them out into a bigger circle.
Chef tip : Make Poli just like the way you make a paratha. Roll them into thin circles.
6. Heat a tava and place the rolled out poli.
7. Drizzle ghee on the sides of the poli.
8. Cook on both the sides.
9. Repeat the same for the entire batch.

Delicious and wholesome Puran Poli is ready . I served it along with Arisi Upma Kozhakattai and Sambar.
