Hi Supermoms,
I am so happy to present this rice recipe to you. Regular experimentations in my kitchen for the last few years has led to this recipe. I have tried various combinations with baby potato and this recipe is a keeper. You can pack it for school /office lunch box also and it tastes even more tasty when they are eaten cold.
Also, the list of masalas is minimum . The only challenge in this recipe is boiling and peeling the baby potatoes. If you have crossed that step ( get some help from your sous chef 😁) , then making this Urulai Masala Sadam is so easy and enjoyable too.
Urulai Masala Sadam :
Preparation time : 10 minutes
Cooking time: 1 hour
Serves : 4-6
1 cup = 250 ml cup
Ingredients :
2 cups basmati rice ( wash, soak in 2 cups water for 30 minutes and cook till soft)
500 gm baby potatoes ( boil and peel )
1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 tablespoon sesame oil + 2 teaspoon oil for frying potatoes ( you can use oil of your choice )
salt to taste
Masala for Grinding :
1 cup fresh coconut ( grated)
1 teaspoon kashmiri chilli powder
2-3 green chillies ( adjust)
1/2 " ginger ( chopped)
4-5 garlic pods
1 onion ( chopped)
1/2 capsicum/green bell pepper ( optional)
2 cloves
1/2 " cinnamon stick
Method :
1. Heat a wide pan with oil and fry the baby potatoes with adequate salt and turmeric powder .
2. Once the baby potatoes are fried on all sides, remove from the pan and set it aside.
3. Grind all the ingredients given under ' masala' to a fine paste using 1/4 cup of water.
4. Heat the wide pan with oil and add the ground masala and adequate salt.
5. Cook till extra water is absorbed and the oil starts to separate on the sides of the pan.
6. Add the fried potatoes , and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
7. Remove from the flame and mix the rice.
8. Once you have mixed the rice , cover the pan and cook on low flame for 3-4 minutes and switch off.
9. You can garnish with caramelised onions, curry leaves or mint leaves ( optional).
Your delicious Urulai Masala Sadam is ready to be served.
