Vazhakkai Podimas | Steamed Raw Banana/plantain Stir Fry | Gluten Free and Vegan Recipe

Vazhakkai Podimas

Hi Supermoms,

Continuing the Kalyana Samayal/Marriage Special recipes , today I am sharing the recipe of Vazhakkai Podimas/ Raw banana stir fry. Unlike the usual stir fry, the raw banana is first steamed, peeled and then grated to make the stir fry. The podimas is so tasty with the addition of fresh grated coconut and has the infused flavours of lemon, ginger and green chillies. 

This is a very light and delicious stir fry recipe, that can be made within minutes. 

Vazhakkai Podimas Recipe :

Preparation time : 2 minutes
Cooking time : 15-20 minutes
Serves : 3-4
1 cup = 250 ml cup

Ingredients :

3-4 raw banana/plantain 
1/2 cup fresh coconut ( grated)
juice of 1/2 lemon ( medium size)
salt to taste

For tempering :

1-2 teaspoons sesame oil( you can use coconut oil also)
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon jeera/cumin seeds
1/2 teaspoon urad dal/split and husked black gram
1/2 teaspoon channa dal/bengal gram
pinch of asafoetida
2-3 green chillies ( finely chopped)
1/2 " ginger ( grated)
1 sprig curry leaves ( roughly torn)

Method :

1. Steam cook the plantain till they are cooked but not mushy.
2. Peel the skin and grate them

3. Heat a kadai/pan with oil and temper with ingredients given for the same.
4. Once tempered add the grated plantain.
5. Add salt and mix well.
6. After 2-3 minutes of cooking over low flame, add the grated coconut, mix and switch off.
7. Add the lemon juice and mix once again.
Your delicious and traditional Vazhakkai Podimas is ready to be served as a part of your lunch menu .
