Hi Supermoms,
In my previous post I shared the traditional , tasty and wholesome green gram idli recipe . I also told you all that I served it along with a tangy gravy called the tomato gothsu. I made a watery gothsu so that I can dunk the idlies and enjoy .
Making this gothsu is so easy. Hardly takes ten minutes. Fresh tomatoes, tempered with spices and cooking along with tamarind juice makes for a great side dish for any tiffin.
When I think of making a gothsu, the first vegetable that comes to my mind is brinjal. But the traditional brinjal gothsu takes time to cook. During such times, I make this tomato gothsu .
It is a simple and very easy side dish that can be made in minutes.
Thakkali Gothsu | Tomato Gostu Recipe :
Preparation time : 5 minutes
Cooking time : 10- 12 minutes
Serves : 4
1 cup = 250 ml cup
Ingredients :
2 large tomatoes ( finely chopped )
marble size tamarind ( soak in 1/2 cup warm water)
1 teaspoon jaggery powder ( optional)
salt to taste
To temper :
2 teaspoons oil ( I used sesame oil)
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/2 teaspoon channa dal/Bengal gram
1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder
3/4 teaspoon red chilli powder ( I used Kashmiri Chilli powder)
3-4 curry leaves
salt to taste
Method :
1. Heat a kadai or heavy bottom pan over low flame with oil.
2. Temper with cumin, channa dal and curry leaves.
3. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and mix with oil and immediately add the chopped tomatoes.
4. Add salt and allow the tomatoes to cook and become mushy.
Chef tip : This will take 4-5 minutes over medium flame. Keep stirring.
5. Add the tamarind juice , jaggery and another 1 cup water.
Chef tip : Adjust water quantity according to your preferred gothsu consistency.
6. Allow the mixture to simmer for around 8-10 minutes and switch off.
Your easy tomato gothsu is now ready to be served along with your breakfast or tiffin dinner.
Happy Cooking !
With love,
